Unsupported by images, this record of this ice-pack associated species appears to be highly anomalous. Ivory Gull remains extremely rare in Far East Asia (with zero records listed on eBird) and the only dated records in Brazil (1991) for Japan are from December to February. Winters mostly between N 50 and N 60 (Ayash 2024) with very few extralimital records south of e,g. 40DN; and most of these immature birds in mid-winter. As there are no images, it would be helpful to know the distance and length of time the bird was seen (and with what optics) and how leucistics gulls were elmiminated from consideration. | ||||

작은부리흰물떼새 | Subspecies re-added in order to improve consistency with Park et al. (2025), which, however appears simply to be following AviList (2025),which states that nominate breeds in Japan, including Ryukyu islands. Based on discussions relating to The Waterbird Population Estimates this does not seem supportable. However, differences between two "types" noted back in the early 2000s (with river-breeding birds "looking" smaller and more often with blackish legs than birds breeding along the coast.
